We have been learning about volcanoes this week! Yesterday we conducted our first science experiment. The students worked in small groups to mold a volcano. They took turns creating a reaction using baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring to simulate an eruption of lava. The students were completely engaged and said it was the best part of their day.

We made it to our goal of reading independently for 20 minutes! The reward for reaching this goal is a pizza party. The class will receive cheese pizza Thursday afternoon.
As we wrap up the end of September our 2nd graders are getting more comfortable in our daily routine. We started our Reading Workshop today and we all agreed it went really well! This year students will be responsible for going through 3 different stations at their own pace. Once they finish one activity, they clean up, check the work board and head to the next one. Our stations include: ABC center where students work on vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and phonics. Writing center where students independently practice writing skills. Math center where students practice things we have previously studied in the year. Reading center where students can pick 2-3 books to read that are not in their book box.
I will be adding a Listening center where students listen to a book being read to them and respond in writing. We are waiting for our technology before we begin this. I will also be adding a Library center where students will have the chance to switch out the books in their book bins once a week to keep them interesting. In my opinion, Reading Workshop is the most important time of the day. This is when students are able to practice what we learn as a class independently. While students are practicing reading, writing, listening, and math skills, I have the chance to pull small groups and work on reading at each students level. This is where our growth will happen! Dear Families, We made it through the first day of school! I know there was some confusion today- please be patient as we are all trying to adjust to the new building. Everything will be running smoothly soon! This month the whole school is focusing on uniforms. Our uniform schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Everyday this month we will be conducting uniform checks. If a student in our class is seen out of uniform out class will get an infraction. If receive LESS THAN 3 infractions in a week we will get a paper pizza slice to hang in our classroom. If at the end of the month we have less than 12 infractions or 4 pizza slices total we get a classroom pizza party! I took a poll of the class and we are all in agreement that pizza is delicious and we would love to earn a pizza party! Let’s work as a team to reach this goal. Any concerns about buying uniforms can be directed to the front office. School Supplies I know some students brought pencil boxes with them to school today because it was listed on the supply list. Not everyone brought a pencil box and we decided to have community supplies. Students will not need personal supplies in their desks. When a material is needed it will be available for the whole class. I sent home most pencil boxes (others will be sent home), please keep these filled with supplies at home for homework. We still need…
Drop-off and Pick-up Today was hectic during these times and we are working to fix it. A letter was sent home today with updated information. Please review the times and map to make sure you know where your students will be. Our class will be waiting on Mango Ave outside door #5 after school starting at 3:10pm. This is going to be an amazing year! Please email with any questions or concerns, or call the office to set up an appointment. ***Please use the link on the HSA Belmont website to my class website to find updates on my blog. This is where important information, as well as class updates can be found in the future. Best, Ms. Olix Please make sure you have filled out the registration packet. If you have not, call the school to set up a time to come in a fill out the necessary paperwork before the school year starts. If you would like to still set up a home visit, I would be happy to bring a registration packet with me for you to fill out at home and return it.
Busses for the year are full, but you can be placed on a wait list after filling out the proper paperwork and will be informed if a space opens up before school begins. Please call Ms. Gloria or Ms. Margarita in the front office for more information. They are the experts! Best, Ms. Olix Thank you to all the families who made it out to Riis Park yesterday for our 2nd grade play date! I had the best time meeting the students and families and am so anxious for the school year to start.
If you were not able to make it, please reach out via email [email protected] to set up a home visit or meeting before school starts so we can discuss the school year. Best, Ms. Olix Hello 2nd grade families!
